Description
This 7.25″ tall patinated bronze figure is after a design by German sculptor Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling (1895 – 1930) and depicts a young boy in the process of lighting a cigarette/cigar which is held between his pursed lips. The lad stands nonchalantly with his left hand in the pocket of his shorts while his right hand grasps a lighter as he prepares to light his cigarette/cigar. His clothing is realistically cast with natural looking drapes and folds and consists of a long sleeved shirt and short pants held up by suspenders. The boy wears a knit cap over his curly hair and has a pair of low boots with turned up toes on his feet. The figure stands atop a rectangular plinth cast to appear as if it is hewn from stone.
The figure is in good condition with no damage or repairs and bears the name of the sculptor “Schmidt-Felling” on the front of the plinth. As an antique, the piece shows signs of age consisting of minor wear to the finish. The 1lb 4oz piece stands 7.25″ tall from the plinth to the top of the boy’s hat and is 2.375″ by 2″ at the base.
This charming figure displays very well and would be a great addition to a collection of late 19th/early 20th century bronze statues. A whimsical antique find!
