Description

1960 Hamilton Flight II ORIGINAL and Scarce
The late 1950s and early 1960s was the golden age of asymmetric models though and there are no finer example than the Flight II. Hamilton only produced 2400 avant-garde, boomerang-shaped Flight II watches in both gold and gold filled. The design was to futuristic for most consumers and the design never caught hold. The Flight II was introduced in 1960 and made for two years. The retail price new was $95.00
Among the most sought-after of Hamilton’s futuristic designs of the 1960s, the Flight II has a bold Space Age asymmetric design case with a large boomerang lug attachment at the top. Most baby boomers or Gen X’rs might be reminded of George Jetson after looking at the Flight. You might even be tempted to believe the Jetsons inspired the Flight models. Today the Flight II is very popular. The design oozes coolness and run a mechanical movement inside – so they are easy to maintain as well.
Case: Space Age asymmetric design 10K yellow gold filled case with a large boomerang lug attachment at the top. The top lug has a textured finish that is continued onto the left side of the bezel. The honeycomb styled lugs give it a “forward look” which was meant to imply motion. It’s a sizable watch and wears a bit larger than you might expect but it’s certainly not large by today’s standards. The watch measures approximately 33mm at the widest point x 34mm in overall length. Overall the case has no gold lost and in very good condition with obvious light wear from use. Original signed crown with the “H” Logo. Inside the case reads: Hamilton W. CO Lancaster , PA. 10K Gold Filled P322426 Star W.C.CO. Outside the case reads 10K Gold Filled Hamilton
Dial: It was originally offered with a gold (“champagne”) colored dial with crossed black lines and the logo at 12 o clock, A silver dial version was offered shorty thereafter; it is much scarcer than the gold dial. This watch has the original gold dial with raised solid 18K gold Arabic numerals and gold dots. Gold Dauphine hands that are true to form. Signed Hamilton under the 12. The dial has a patina but overall very good condition.
Movement: Under the dial is a all American made, high grade, original Hamilton Hallmarked, Caliber 770, 22 Jewel, Precision manual wind movement. The movement is pure joy to look at. Even though very few people would ever set their eyes on the movement, great care was taken to make it a thing of beauty.
We disassembled it, cleaned every single tiny part, put it back together, polished all surfaces, and calibrated it to keep good time. Sounds expensive and complicated? It is! It will cost you about $150 to have this work done. The Timegrapher test the movement at few seconds fast per day.
Attached to this watch is a new Hirsch classic black Lizard leather band, 16mm wide with anti-allergic matching tone buckle.
In 1993 Hamilton reissued the “Flight II” as a gold-plated watch with stainless steel back and quartz movement. I have several listed for sell here on Ruby Lane. These were sold in yellow or rose gold-plate with silver or black dial. They differed from the originals in that they had a center sweep second hand and incorrect dial markings. It was not successful in the marketplace and was discontinued in 1997. Ironically, in succeeding years it has become a very popular collectors item which sometimes sells for large premiums over the original list price.
